Location and description of the Ranch
|
It is
placed in the NW of Peninsula Valdés in the province Chubut, Argentina. It
is
a private property dedicated to the production of wool and meet from
sheep. It is an area of 5200 ha, with 4.5 km of coast where there is
a
colony of Magellanic penguin. Description

History of the project, legal facts
|
The
ranch owners ask ZonotriKia team for the development of a management
plan for tourism, in order to obtain the status of rural keeper (custodio
rural). The status of rural keeper is a law project proposed by the
Tourism Bureau of Chubut, where they delay the use and control of natural

Global management plan
|
The
management plan proposed by ZonotriKia include subprograms of research
and monitoring, operative, control and inspect. The responsible to
develop and handle the program is the ranch owner. Description

Research project
|
We
carried out basic and applied research projects, during the 1999 y 2000
penguin breeding seasons . We made population census with a sampling of
more than 700 points. We measured the vegetation covertures, diversity and
floristic abundance, as the type of soil present in the colony. Description

Environmental impact
|
We
designed an environmental impact study in order to evaluate the possible
changes in the colony made by the potential tourist activity. This
study will allow us to determine parameters for measuring the population and
behavioral evolution in a colony that has never been used for tourism. Description

Environmental interpretation
|
We
made a global environmental interpretation plan, that includes the houses
in the ranch, routes, penguin colony and surrounding areas. We
designed a thematic warehouse, desert interpretative pathways, brochures,
and thematic diagrams and books for the exclusive use in this ranch. Description

Our vision about the project
|
Rural keeper's figure that would sustain the handling proposal for this and other fields of property deprived in the County of the Chubut, would be constituted as the first case of state collaboration and deprived in handling of protected areas. The
plan's sustainability will depend on both parts: on the proprietor's commitment in fulfilling the conditions settled down in their own plan, and
on the state in making a permanent and careful control of the same one.

creation of this plan is Daniel Pérez Martínez, a member of ZonotriKia
Team. The responsible of the creation of the status of rural keeper is the
Secretary of Tourism and Protected areas of Chubut. The responsible of the
use and management of the natural and historic resources in the area is the
owner of the ranch
